The 2012 Hawk Watching Season has begun at Wildcat Ridge Hawk Watch. Fred Vanderburgh spotted the first migrating bird of the season on Thursday, August 16th. The southbound bird was a Sharp-Shinned hawk. The migration has begun.
I made my first trip of the season up to the hawk watch today, but we were skunked. No migrating birds were spotted. However, I am learning from friends that they’re already seeing the migration of songbirds beginning. They tell me that it is unusually early in the year for this to be happening. Why the songbird migration is occurring so early this year is an open question. Whether the hawk migration will follow suit is another open question, but even after one visit, it is clear that the 2012 season is already taking shape.
See you at the hawk watch
